Strike hits state, less impact in city

Normal life was severely affected and banking and transport sectors stood near-paralysed across the state during the nationwide general strike called by trade unions on Tuesday. All educational institutions across AP remained closed, and APSRTC cancelled buses in most parts. Trains chugged in late through the day. While the bandh was near-complete in all districts, the impact was felt less in the twin cities, where only AC buses were suspended till afternoon.

About 55,000 employees of Central and state government, cooperative and grameen banks rem-ained off duty in support of the strike, called by unions to demand tighter labour laws, a minimum wage and a leash on inflation. The AP Bank Employees Federation held protests in front of all bank branches. Most private offices, including the IT firms, remained unaffected. In a first since 1993, about 1,000 regular Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams staff, supported by over 3,000 contract workers, joined the strike.
