Hyderabad: Trade unions which have called for a country- wide general strike today have appealed to all employees and workers in the State to ensure active participation in their protest against the “anti-worker and anti-people policies” being pursued by the State and Central government.
Normal life in the City is likely to be hit with auto unions and a few RTC unions joining the strike. So is the case with the scheduled examinations. Osmania University has postponed the MCA semester I examinations to March 12 and the under-graduate practical exams will be held on February 29 while JNTU has postponed the examinations scheduled for Tuesday. Work in the public sector banks too is also likely to be affected.
The unions representing the employees in various organizations have announced their support to the protest. Large scale participation of workers in the unorganized sector is also expected. The state unit of the National Confederation of Bank Employees and the South Central Railway Mazdoor Union are among those organizations announced their support for the shutdown. The South Central Railway Mazdoor Union will hold demonstrations and lunch hour meeting at Rail Nilayam as part of the protest.
The All Indian Railwaymen’s Federation announced its support for the bandh. It wanted immediate steps to address the problem of unemployment and check the price rise. It also stressed the need for effective implementation of labour laws. The National Confederation of Bank Employees will be holding demonstrations and rallies in different towns in the State including the SBI Buildings, Bank Street in Hyderabad, at 11.30 am to protest the outsourcing of bank jobs. The bank employees are demanding scrapping of Khandelwal Committee Recommendations and settlement of long pending issues. The insurance corporation employees unions will be participating in the strike and hold demonstrations in front of the Division Office at 10 am and later at the LIC Divisional Office. Various political parties including TDP, BJP and employee unions including TNGOS also extended their support to the strike. The TNGOs leader Swamy Goud said they will hold demonstrations across Telangana.
